3. Course Objectives

The immune system has evolved elaborate mechanisms to protect the host from attacks by foreign agents. The mammalian immune system usually responds to pathogen invasion in two phases: broadly-specific innate responses via complement activation and phagocytosis & uniquely-specific adaptive responses by B and T lymphocytes. Although the immune system protects the host from infection and cancer, inappropriate or defective responses of the system can lead to various diseases. In this course, students will learn the basic principles governing the development, function, and regulation of the immune system and related diseases.
