3. 강의목표
This course covers the fundamentals of thermodynamics for materials science and engineering chiefly based on the classical thermodynamics approach. The lecture begins with the definition of unique terminologies in thermodynamics like system, surrounding, property, state, equilibrium, etc. and then introduces some basic laws (the first, second, and third law) of thermodynamics including the concept of internal energy, enthalpy and entropy. Next, the basic criterion for phase equilibrium is established with the Gibbs free energy derived with the Legendre transformation of energy conservation equation. This concept extends to binary component system and finally provides the conceptual basis to understand a phase diagram. A fundamental electrochemistry can be introduced briefly at the end of class.
