3. Course Objectives

From the development of atomic clocks to the investigation of complex quantum phenomena, Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics has made hallmark contributions in the field of quantum science and technology. This course aims to introduce this exciting research field to the undergraduates by covering such topics as:

1) Basic quantum structure of simple atoms (alkali and alkaline-earth atoms)
2) Review the central tools of AMO research (spectroscopy, laser cooling and trapping, etc.)
3) Explore current research themes in AMO physics (BEC and strongly interacting Fermi gases, optical lattices, ultracold molecules, etc.)
