3. Course Objectives

Current research trend is on drastic shifts from identification of structures and functions of individual gene products to regulation and interaction of multiple proteins in living cells and furthermore intact organisms. Triggered by recent development of optical technologies, a number of unprecedented imaging methods are available now. In addition to imaging itself, a new powerful methodogy that takes advantage of existing methods recently emerges, optogentics. It would allow us to modulate a number of physiological features at the cellular level and also organism level, which can be potetially applicable to various approaches such as neuroscience. This lecture has been devised for students to understand principles of microscopes and learn about a variety of new molecular imaging methods, incluidng the recent application such as optogenetics.
