3. Course Objectives

This course introduces basic theories of risk management and its technical approaches. We will discuss risk and uncertainty, risk measures and their technical mechanisms (i.e., risk control and financing measures), the principle of insurance and its market, alternative risk transfer and enterprise risk management. Further discussions will be on quantitative frameworks for managing financial risks that consist of market, credit and operational risks. We will conclude the course by exploring how risk management can address corporate decision-making and help decision-makers achieve their objectives (i.e., firm value maximization). This course will guide you to explore fundamentals of risk and risk management from the economics and engineering perspectives.
