2. Instructor Information
3. Course Objectives
This class is focusing on the fine crystal structural analysis for Li-ion battery materials, specifically using synchrotron, lab scale X-ray, and neutron diffraction source. We are learning about basis of crystallographic theory in terms of materials science aspect, and then move to the practice of refinement or XANES analysis using programs.
Most of incumbent materials for lithium-ion batteries are based on the crystalline. Therefore, various crystal structural properties being on the atomic level significantly affect the electrochemical properties of lithium-ion batteries. For example, atomic defects present in the lithium diffusion pathway eventually lowered the diffusion coefficient of particle, resulting in a sluggish electrochemical reaction. Therefore, it is critical to accurately analyze the properties of the material and design the electrode according to the crystallographic information. In this class, we are going to study the in-depth crystal structure analysis for lithium rechargeable batteries.
