Purpose: The purpose of this course is to improve the students’ ability to communicate in English professionally in various modes.

The course is designed to meet the expanding English needs of graduate students as global citizens and scholars/academics by exposing them to diverse language situations they will encounter in real life. Register, structures, and patterns will be introduced and modeled to effectively communicate in international lab & work situations from daily conversations, email writing, resumes and job interviews, phone calls and on and offline meetings to responding to issues, negotiating plans and projects, and articulating and presenting ideas. Students will be expected to work both individually and in groups to exchange ideas, to evaluate their peers, to lead group and class discussions, role plan and to summarize concepts and discussions, all of which will build students’ English confidence and competence to communicate naturally and effectively.

Any students with more than 4 absences will not be able to pass the class. If you are not able to attend class, or will be late, you must email me in advance AND submit documentation as proof for the absence/ lateness to be excused. Otherwise, 2% will be deducted for each unexcused absence.Repeated lateness can affect your grade as an unexcused absence. Participation is checked through a combination of preparedness, attendance, in-class interactions, and peer-reviews. Missing an in-class assignment or peer-review session due to lateness or absence will result in the loss of those participation points.
