사회과학은 근대사회와 함께 출현한 학문 분과이다. 19세기 초기에는 정치경제학(political economy)이란 명칭으로 불렸다가 19세기 후반에 들어서면서 오늘날과 같은 학문분과로 분화되었다. 사회과학은 사회질서의 근거와 구조, 인간행동과 심리, 국가와 시민사회, 정치체제의 변동, 경제현상 등의 본질을 두루 탐구하는 학문으로서 인간과 사회의 관계가 가장 중요한 연구대상이라 하겠다. 이 강의에서는 사회과학의 중요한 쟁점과 이론, 사상을 검토하면서 각 주제들이 어떻게 데이터분석과 연결될 수 있는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 20세기 사회과학은 사상과 이론을 중심으로 전개되었지만, 21세기에는 사회과학적 연구를 데이터와 연결해 실증적 근거와 분석을 내놓는 것이 주류가 될 전망이다. 그것은 AI, IT문명의 발전과 맥을 같이 한다. 모든 주제와 대상을 데이터화한다! 이것이 21세기 사회과학의 핵심적 관심이다. 데이터로 말한다는 것은 실증과학의 장점이기도 하지만, 20세기 사회과학이 표본데이터를 주로 사용한 데에 비해 21세기 사회과학은 대량데이터, 무작위 데이터를 사용해 유의미한 명제를 추출하는 것을 특징으로 한다. 모든 사회과학 분야를 섭렵하기는 어려운 현실에서 사회과학의 주요 주제에 대한 강의를 중심으로 연구대상을 데이터화해 분석하는 사례를 이해하고 학습하는 데에 초점을 둔다.
